CAG ONE Blade Profiling: Precision Performance for Every Player
Discover how CAG ONE blade profiling technology delivers NHL-level precision for players of all ages and positions — and what the numbers on that chart actually mean for your game.
CAG ONE Blade Profiling: Precision Performance for Every Player
If you've ever wondered why two players with the same skates can feel completely different on the ice, the answer often comes down to blade profiling. At Hockey Store N More, we use CAG ONE profiling technology — the same system trusted by over 100 professional NHL teams — to dial in your blades for your size, position, and skating style.
Here's what you need to know.
What Is Blade Profiling?
Blade profiling (also called blade contouring or rockering) refers to the shape of the blade's bottom edge from heel to toe. A flatter profile keeps more blade in contact with the ice, giving you stability and power. A more aggressive (shorter radius) profile rocks you forward, improving agility and quickness.
Most skates come from the factory with a generic profile that's a compromise for the average skater. Profiling customizes that curve to match your body and your game.
Why CAG ONE?
CAG ONE has been manufacturing precision skate equipment factory-direct since 1987. Their NHL Skate Profiler is used by professional equipment staff across the league, delivering:
- Elite profiling accuracy — consistent results every single time
- Custom glide optimization — tailored to your size and position
- Capacity for up to 2,000 pairs — built for serious, high-volume use
When you bring your skates to Hockey Store N More, you're getting the same technology the pros rely on.
Understanding the CAG ONE Profile Chart
The chart below breaks down the recommended profiles by skate size and player position.
Player Profiles (Skaters)
Profile numbers represent the radius of the blade curve in feet. A lower number means a more aggressive rocker (more agility, quicker turns). A higher number means a flatter profile (more stability, stronger stride).
| Skate Size | Position | Profile Range |
|---|---|---|
| 10–13 (Youth) | Forward / Defense | 20–35 |
| 1–3 (Junior) | Forward / Defense | 20–35 |
| 4–6 | Forward / Defense | 20–35 |
| 4–6 | Leaning Forward / Defense | 25–40 |
| 7–8 | Forward / Defense | 25–45 |
| 7–8 | Leaning Forward / Defense | 30–50 |
| 9–10 | Forward / Defense | 25–45 |
| 9–10 | Leaning Forward / Defense | 40–65 |
| 11–12 | Forward / Defense | 35–65 |
| 11–12 | Leaning Forward / Defense | 40–65 |
Leaning Forward profiles are designed for players who naturally skate with a more aggressive forward lean — common in power forwards and defensemen who prioritize drive over quick pivots.
Goalie Profiles
Goalies need a very different profile than skaters — much flatter to maximize lateral push and stability in the crease.
| Skate Size | Profile Range |
|---|---|
| 1–2 | 55–100 |
| 3–4 | 65–120 |
| 5–6 | 75–140 |
| 7–8 | 90–160 |
| 9–10 | 100–180 |
| 11–12 | 110–200 |
The higher numbers reflect the flatter, more stable profile goalies need to push laterally and hold their ground.
Blade Thickness
CAG ONE profiles are engineered around specific blade thicknesses:
- Player blades: 2.9 mm
- Goalie blades: 4.0 mm
- Figure skate blades: 3.8 mm
These measurements matter because the profile grind must be matched to the blade's actual thickness for accurate, consistent results.
Hollow Depth: The Other Half of the Equation
Profiling shapes the rocker of the blade. The hollow determines the depth of the groove ground into the bottom of the blade — and it directly affects grip versus glide.
| Position | Hollow Depth |
|---|---|
| Player | 1/2" |
| Goalie | 1 1/4" |
| Figure – Freestyle | 1/2" |
| Figure – Combine | 3/4" |
| Figure – Figure | 1" |
A shallower hollow (larger number like 1") gives you more glide and speed — great for defensemen and players on larger ice surfaces. A deeper hollow (smaller number like 3/8") gives you more bite and grip — preferred by forwards who need quick cuts and tight turns.
Not sure what hollow is right for you? Our staff will ask about your position, ice surface, and skating style to make the right call.
Who Should Get a CAG ONE Profile?
The short answer: any serious player who wants to skate better. Profiling is especially impactful for:
- Players who've recently grown — your profile should be updated as your skate size changes
- Players switching positions — a forward moving to defense (or vice versa) benefits from a profile adjustment
- Players who feel "stuck" or slow — often a profile issue, not a fitness issue
- New skate owners — factory profiles are generic; a custom profile unlocks the skate's full potential
